The Ministry is implementing the scheme of National Lake Conservation Plan (NLCP) since June, 2001 for conservation and management of polluted and degraded lakes in urban and semi-urban areas of the country through an integrated ecosystem approach.
The Minister of state (I/C) for Environment and Forests Smt. Jayanthi Natarajan further stated in Lok Sabha today that under the scheme, through a study, this Ministry had identified 62 lakes in the country for conservation, details of which were shared with the State Governments for prioritization and amendments, if any. A number of States have submitted prioritization and proposals for conservation of lakes in their States.
The Ministry has so far, sanctioned projects for conservation of 61 lakes at a total cost of Rs.1031.18 crore
