Loss to Indian Railways Due to Train Accidents

Loss of Railway property in consequential train accidents in 2012-13 has been estimated to Rs. 74.93 crore (approx.) and the amount of compensation paid by Railways in train accidents during 2012-13 has been estimated to Rs. 320 crore (approx).

 There is no provision for changing of such losses from insurance companies. The amount of compensation paid by Railways to the victims of train accidents during 2010-11,2011-12 and 2012-13 has been estimated to Rs. 3.77 crore (approx), Rs 5.11 crore (approx) and Rs. 3.20 crore(approx). 

All possible steps are undertaken on a continual basis to prevent accidents and thereby to wipe out losses due to train accidents. 

These include timely replacement of over-aged assets, adoption of suitable technologies for upgradation and maintenance of track, rolling stock, signalling and interlocking systems, safety drives, and inspections at regular intervals to monitor and educate staff for observance of safe practices. 

Safety devices/systems being introduced to prevent accidents include provision of Block Proving Axle Counters (BPAC), Auxiliary Warning System (AWS), Vigilance Control Device (VCD), Train Protection Warning System (TPWS), Train Collision Avoidance System/Anti Collision Device(ACD),etc. 

This information was given by the Minister of State for Railways Shri Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury in written reply to a question in Lok Sabha today.
